Android 4.0.4 (IMM76D) Update for Nexus S (How To Update)

Google has finally released the long-awaited Android 4.0.4 (IMM76D) software update for the Samsung Nexus S. This was due for a long time. An Android 4.0.3 update was released a couple of months ago, but it was paused due to some battery and CPU usage issues.
Android 4.0.4 has started being rolled out to Samsung Nexus S (I9020T, I9023) and will be available to you over-the-air (OTA). If you can’t wait, you can always follow the extensive guide below and get your Nexus S updated to Android 4.0.4.

Install Android 4.0.4 Software Update on Nexus S [For Non-ROOTED]

Just To Remember:
  • This ROM is only for Nexus S (I9020T, I9023) running on Android 4.0.3 and I am not sure if it will work on the other variants of the Nexus S on other carriers.
  • My phone was NOT rooted.
  • Make sure you backup all your data in your phone before proceeding.
Complete Step-By-Step Instructions:
Step 1 - Download Android 4.0.4  (hR7QFEtn.zip) for Nexus S on your PC, if you haven’t already. Rename it to update.zip.
Step 2 - Connect and mount your Nexus S USB memory on your computer using the USB cable.
Step 3 - Now copy/paste the update.zip file to your SD card. Make sure the file is in the root (not in any folders).
Step 4 - Then turn off your phone.
Step 5 - Now to get in the bootloader mode. Turn on the phone while pressing and holding the volume up and power buttons.
Step 6 - Follow the navigation instructions on the screen. Navigate using volume keys and select RECOVERY.
Step 7 - You will get an exclamation mark now. Again hold your volume up and power buttons. You should now be in your recovery mode.
Step 8 - Select update from SD card. Now select update.zip file and select it with the Power button. Installation should start now.
Step 9 - After the installation completes, the phone will boot now and it might take about 5 minutes to boot on your first time. So, please wait.
That’s it! Your Nexus S should have the official Android 4.0.4 ICS software update installed on your phone! Go to Settings >About phone to verify.

How to Install Android 4.0.4 Software Update on Nexus S [For ROOTED]

If you are used to installing custom ROMs on your Nexus S, then this should not be any different for you. However, for beginners, you need to root your Nexus and install a custom recovery. Step 1 - Download Android 4.0.4  (hR7QFEtn.zip) for Nexus S on your PC, if you haven’t already.
Step 2 - Connect and mount your Nexus S USB memory on your computer using the USB cable.
Step 3 - Now copy/paste the hR7QFEtn.zip file to your SD card. Make sure the file is in the SD card root.
Step 4 - Then turn off your phone.

Step 7 - Assuming you have ClockworkMod recovery, scroll down to “flash zip from SD card” and press the power button to select it.

Step 9 -Now using your volume keys, navigate to hR7QFEtn.zip and select it using the power button. Confirm the installation on the next screen and the installation procedure should start now.
Step 10 - After the installation completes, go to “+++++Go Back” and reboot the phone by selecting “reboot system now” from the recovery menu. The phone will boot now and it might take about 5 minutes to boot on your first time. So, please wait.
That’s it! Your Nexus S should have the official Android 4.0.4 software update installed on your phone! Go to Settings >About phone to verify.
